Relocation Information

If you are thinking of re-locating, the Reedsport / Winchester Bay area is a wonderful choice. Our charming coastal community offers a temperate climate, excellent schools and medical care, a variety of shopping, and a host of amenities to round out leisure activities.

CLIMATE

Our climate appeals to many, as do the beautiful changes of the seasons. Winters tend to be somewhat rainy, but otherwise mild. Temperatures fluctuate between about 37-51 degrees, with a rare cold snap blessing us with a light dusting of snow. Winter is a favorite time for whale watchers and storm watchers.

Spring is heralded with the emergence of new leaves on the trees and newborns at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area chasing each other around like children under their mothers' watchful eyes. Summer blesses us with temperatures mostly in the 70s and recreational opportunities abound at nearby beaches, lakes and dunes. Fall arrives with a kaleidoscope of shades of oranges, yellows and reds sprinkled amid the dark evergreen forest, and a slight crispness to the air.

SCHOOLS

The Reedsport School District is committed to individualized attention and putting students first in the pursuit of excellence. With an enrollment of 900, 101 highly-trained faculty and staff are dedicated to helping each student reach his or her potential. Emphasizing skills that are needed to lead successful and fulfilling lives, the curriculum is coordinated among three schools to meet the rigorous standards of the Oregon Educational Act for the 21st Century.

Highland Elementary School is one of three schools in Oregon to implement the core knowledge curriculum, a sequenced program for teaching essential concepts in math, science, history, geography, language and fine arts. Conversational Spanish beginning in the second grade and weekly swimming, music and art lessons are other benefits.

Reedsport Junior/Senior High School is committed to preparing youth for their chosen roles in society as independent citizens. Students must take four years of progressive courses in each of five core areas: language, arts, mathematics, science, social studies and life skills, including physical education, health, computer technology and personal finance. A new state-of-the-art technology lab instructs business, industrial and publishing technology courses. Our students benefited from scholarship awards totaling more than $408,137 in 2000. Athletics include: football, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, swimming, cross-country, track and golf.

Southwestern Oregon Community College is located in nearby Coos Bay, and extension courses are conveniently offered at the Reedsport Junior/Senior High School campus.
